Absorbine Team Member Spotlight - Amy Cairy riding her dressage horse in an outdoor ring

In this Spotlight, we’re speaking with Amy Cairy our Vice President of Marketing who has been on the team for close to 10 years. She’s just an impressive person overall. Amy is a lifelong equestrian with a story that starts out like so many us – a little girl with horse fever learning everything she can about horses at 4-H. Since then, Amy has dedicated her life to furthering her knowledge of horse nutrition and care. Along this path she’s molded herself into a venerable businesswoman while everyday being the epitome of professionalism. Here is our interview with Amy Cairy and her heart horse Lissomely aka Liam.

Absorbine: What do you do with your horse?

Amy: Liam and I train and compete in dressage. I imported him from Germany just as he turned 4 years old and we’ve been having a lot of fun together. He’s a very smart and athletic horse and so to keep things interesting, we also jump and trail ride – he loves cantering up big hills and splashing in water!

Absorbine: Any fun horse care tips you’d like to share? Can include product tricks or “out of the box” uses.

Amy: One thing I do that I get asked about a lot is trailering Liam with a fly mask on. I’ve known a few horses that have suffered eye injuries from hay and shavings flying around in the trailer. I always put a fly mask on Liam once he gets in the trailer to help keep any debris away from his eyes. I like the UltraShield fly masks as they are so breathable and I know he will be dry and comfortable throughout the trip.

Absorbine: What Absorbine products do you like, and why did you start using them?

Amy: I am huge fan of UltraShield® EX. Whether they’re working in the ring or relaxing in the pasture, there’s nothing more irritating to the horses than being tormented by flies. I’ve used UltraShield EX for years and count on the “black bottle” to not only protect my horse from disease-carrying insects, but to also let him enjoy his time outside during our very short summers. Hooflex Natural is another one of my favorite products. Between the ever-changing turnout conditions in New England (wet, dry, wet, dry) and riding in footing that is treated for dust (which can be very drying on hooves), I love knowing that I can help balance the moisture in his hooves and keep them healthy. I also really like the natural matte finish it leaves on his hooves and use it at shows too.

Absorbine: What’s the funniest thing non-horse people ask you about horses?

Amy: I think the funniest question I get from non-horse people is: “If you’ve been riding for so long why do you still need to take lessons?” Trying to explain the humbling sport that is horseback riding is often very difficult and the more I know, the more I realize I have a lot more to learn!

Absorbine: What do you love most about your horse?

Amy: His joy for life. Liam loves all people and animals and can always be found giving cuddles to anyone that gets close enough to him. He is also curious about everything. If he had thumbs, there’d be no stopping him from exploring the world (and the feed room, tack room, and people’s cars). He’s so smart and tries so hard. He can be a bit spicy and opinionated at times, but I love that about him too. I purchased Liam from watching a video. I didn’t meet him until I picked him up at the airport after import. On the video, I was impressed with his powerful movement and balance, but I really won the lottery to have a horse with such an amazing personality and such character too.
