Magic Cushion™ Proven to Reduce Hoof Heat

Managing heat and inflammation in your horse’s hooves is essential to keeping horses sound and comfortable. Whether your horse is recovering from a challenging workout, navigating tricky footing, or is prone to sore feet, finding a way to provide relief that is backed by science is key.

A thermographic study by Michael Stewart, DVM of Stewart Equine Clinic (Windsor, Connecticut) and certified thermographer Deborah Crane from Equine Sports Therapies (Brooklyn, Connecticut) set out to quantify what horse owners and farriers have observed for years: Magic Cushion™ reduces hoof heat fast, and keeps working hours after application.

Study Overview

The study used infrared thermography to verify and document the temperature-reducing effects of Magic Cushion™ and Magic Cushion™ Xtreme. The project involved two similarly conditioned horses over three days, with strict environmental controls to ensure accurate imaging results.

How the Study Worked

Two horses—a Morgan mare and a Connemara gelding—were exercised for approximately one hour on uneven terrain to elevate hoof temperatures, mimicking the type of stress a horse might experience during a ride or competition.

Horse 1 received Magic Cushion™ on the left front hoof.

Horse 2 received Magic Cushion™ Xtreme on the right front hoof.

Thermal images were taken at baseline (immediately post-exercise) and then 1 hour, 4 hours, and 24 hours after the application of the hoof packing materials.

Both products significantly reduced hoof heat within one hour of application, and the cooling effect was sustained—or even improved—24 hours later.

Why It Matters

Hoof heat is often an indicator of inflammation, concussion, or early laminitic stress. The ability to measurably reduce heat supports horse comfort. This can play a critical role in proactive hoof care, especially for horses in heavy work or recovering from the impact of firm footing.

Conclusion

The thermographic evidence demonstrates that Hooflex® Magic Cushion™ and Magic Cushion™ Xtreme work fast and keep working for 24 hours. With results in as little as one hour and cooling effects continuing into the next day, these products are a trusted, science-backed solution for managing hoof heat and supporting equine hoof health.
