Sugar content is measured by the Non-Structural Carbohydrate (NSC) result which measures both sugar and starch. The Apple Recipe contains 23% NSC and the Banana Recipe contains 26% NSC.

The nutritional needs of horses with EMS or PPID can be very specific, especially related to the amount of sugar in the diet. Depending on the individual horse’s unique situation, the Upcycled Horse Treats may be appropriate, especially fed in moderation, but we recommend you consult with your veterinarian before feeding. Honest to Goodness Upcycled Horse Treats have not been specifically tested for safety in pregnant or lactating mares. The ingredients in the recipes are all safe and appropriate for horses, but given the special needs of pregnant and lactating mares, we recommend you consult with your veterinarian before feeding.

Honest to Goodness Upcycled Horse Treats were formulated by an Equine Nutritionist for horses specifically. That said, the ingredients are simple and clean and so owners may choose to feed the treats at their discretion, but we would recommend consulting with your veterinarian before doing so.

The upcycled apples come from Washington state. We’re using apple pomace, which is all the good stuff leftover after apples are pressed for juice and cider. The apple pomace is a great nutritional foodstuff for horses with naturally occurring antioxidants and polyphenols. Our bananas come from the Philippines and are available due to excess supply and would otherwise have gone to waste.

The bags are filled by weight, so the exact number of treats in each can vary slightly. On average, the 2lb bag will have ~150 treats, the 3lb bag will have ~225 treats and the 5oz sample bags have ~25 treats.
