What is New World Screwworm?
New World Screwworm (NWS, Cochliomyia hominivorax) is a destructive pest that can affect livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, humans and birds. Adult screwworm flies are metallic blue-green with three dark stripes on their thorax, a bright yellow face, and distinctive red-orange eyes. They are roughly the size of a common housefly.
The greatest threat comes from the larvae, which feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals. Larvae can grow to approximately 2/3 inch in length and may cause severe tissue damage if left untreated.
Following a large-scale eradication effort that began in the 1950s, New World Screwworm was successfully eliminated from the United States, Mexico, and much of Central America. However, on June 3, 2026, the USDA confirmed the detection of New World Screwworm in West Texas. For the latest updates and outbreak information, visit www.screwworm.gov.
To support response and control efforts, Absorbine has pursued FIFRA Section 2(ee) recommendations for Absorbine® UltraShield® EX throughout the United States. We are continuing to work closely with state regulatory agencies and will have updates as additional recommendations become available.
What is a FIFRA Section 2(ee) Recommendation?
FIFRA Section 2(ee) allows certain pesticide uses that are not specifically listed on a product label, provided the use site is already included on the label and the use is not otherwise prohibited. Individual states may accept these recommendations to help address emerging pest management needs, such as New World Screwworm response efforts.
What Horse Owners Need to Know
Each recommendation works alongside the product’s existing EPA-registered container label and does not change its application directions. Customers using one of these products for this purpose must follow the container label and have the corresponding 2(ee) recommendation in their possession at the time of application.
