When Trisha C. of Newburgh, New York met Nike for the first time, she knew she was in love. The leggy chestnut gelding captured her heart, and she and her mom, Laura, felt there was certainly room in their family for him. They officially adopted the retired Standardbred pacer from the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, excited to give Nike a forever home and a new start on life.
Two days later, however, disaster struck. Trisha found Nike in the pasture with a large portion of his back right hoof sheared off, exposing tender flesh and bleeding heavily.
“Nike came to us with very dry, cracked feet, so we knew proper hoof care would be important, but now it was critical,” Laura said. “He must have hit the hoof just right, causing it to split.” The damage was significant, and the vet was called out right away. Dr. D’Abbraccio bandaged the wound up, and helped put a plan together for recovery.
Dr. D’Abbracio stressed the importance of the hoof growing out correctly, and recommended putting Nike on a daily hoof supplement to help the process along. He handed Trisha and Laura a list of his favorites, and they did their research, comparing ingredients and costs. Hooflex® Concentrated Hoof Builder stood out, and they decided to give it a try.
We can’t help but agree with their choice. When we formulated Hooflex® Concentrated Hoof Builder, we only used ingredients targeted towards hoof health, leaving out any fillers. The high-quality hoof health ingredients including biotin and Omega-3s are positioned for optimal utilization thanks to Tasco® AOS and Diamond V® Original XPC prebiotics. These foster microbes in the gut to help promote absorption of hoof nutrients for optimal results.
Two weeks after the injury, the vet returned to assess Nike’s progress. He was pleased to see the hoof had begun the healing process without infection, and was glad to hear Trisha and Laura had started him on Hooflex® Concentrated Hoof Builder. The big question now: would the hoof grow out?
Nike received his scoop of Hooflex® Concentrated Hoof Builder every day for six months, as Trisha and Laura carefully monitored his recovery and brought him along towards rehabilitation. They were surprised to see how quickly things were moving along.
“Adding Hooflex® Concentrated Hoof Builder was the only change we made to Nike’s diet during this time, and wow, the results were amazing!” Laura says in hindsight. At the time of his injury, our veterinarian and farrier gave us on estimate of nine months to a full year for the hoof to fully heal and regrow. With Hooflex® Concentrated Hoof Builder, Nike came through in just six months!”
Now that’s a transformation. We were so glad to hear that Hooflex® Concentrated Hoof Builder helped Nike regrow strong, healthy hoof wall so quickly, helping to keep his path to recovery smooth. Trisha and Nike are ready to get back in the saddle now, and are on their way to a long and happy career together. Thank you, Trisha and Laura!
